It is such a well-deserved category on its own, not as mere "Cookbooks" or "Recipe books" but as a mini literary genre of its own.
On my trip to Vancouver I visited Macleod's Books, a second hand bookstore that's every book-hungry bookworm's playground. There's an expression in Spanish that goes 'feliz como una lombriz' (literal translation: happy as an earthworm, or perhaps equivalent to the English: happy as a clam) which perfectly describes my emotional status during my visit- even the bookshop owner was annoyed at my idiotic non-stop grinning and constant 'Oooh's and 'Aaah's.
Illuminated by a medium-sized window are two bookcases stocked with food-related books, and around the middle of it, they have a section denominated 'Food Writing' which wasn't as diverse as I thought it'd be (I'd say they have around fifty books), but the sole existence of a shelf labelled (see image below) with the description:
FOOD WRITING
HISTORY, POLITICS, CULTURE + MINDFUL EATING
Is of great significance.
Like a ray of sunshine peaking through the clouds.
Like a fluorescent light bulb popping up above my head.
The legit confirmation that literature on food IS a thing!
:
This,
ignites a new sense of hope and a refreshing raison d'etre to this third-world country girl (Yours Truly).
It's more than just a butterflies in the stomach sort of excitement,
I've been with writer's block for almost a year, and I feel as if I've found my calling
And if not,
It's a blend of two of my favourite worlds (Food + Creative Writing) into a tie-dyed creative outlet: making this the first nudge to start this blog.
So, please hop in and share this journey with me.
